purchase of electrical appliances
When choosing new electrical appliances pay attention to their energy efficiency. The so-called energy labels which rate the electrical appliances from A to G (from the most economical to the higher-consumption ones) will help you in your choice. For electrical appliances which are in stand-by mode during the greater part of the day, get informed about their consumption in stand-by mode.
heating
- each lower temperature degree may mean up to 6 % saved electricity;
- during the cold season air the rooms for a short period of time, the windows opened wide (3 or 4 times a day for 10 – 15 min.);
- regulate the temperature in the individual rooms with the rmost at valves;
- the good thermo-insulation saves heating costs and at the same time provides for the good protection from summer heat.
water heating
- Place the water heating appliance as close to the consumption point, as possible, to prevent from power loss along the line;
- Set the tank/boiler to heat water to 55-60°C;
- If you take a shower, you will save not only electricity, but also water – compared to taking a bath you will consume three times less electricity.
cooking
- if you use an electric cooker, turn off the hot plates 10 minutes earlier and leave the dish cook with the residual heat;
- when you buy a new cooker, choose one with glass-ceramic plate, which is more efficient at lower electricity consumption;
- if you frequently use the oven, choose one with hot air circulation, which will enable you to bake food evenly at lower temperature. This will save up to 40% electricity.
refrigerator
- the refrigerator must be placed at a cooler place - with every degree exceeding 20 °C its consumption increases by 6 %;
- the optimal temperature for preserving food in a refrigerator is + 5 °C, and in a freezer -18 °C. The lower temperature results in higher consumption;
- when buying a new refrigerator it is worth investing in energy efficiency class A, These fridges are more expensive compared to the class B ones, but the difference is compensated by the lower consumption;
- if you have had this refrigerator for more than 10 years, it is time to consider buying a new one;
- from time to time defrost the semi-automatic defrost system refrigerators. The thick ice layer takes up additional electricity.
laundry
- the good quality detergent will allow you to wash at lower temperature – this way you will save some of the electricity, necessary for water heating.
- wash at 90 °C and use pre-wash programmes only when it is really necessary – these programmes consume a lot of electricity;
- use the full capacity of the washing machine.
lighting
- use compact fluorescent bulbs, or the so-called economic bulbs. Compared to the incandescent light bulbs they save up to 80 % electricity but emit the same light;
- for lighting during night use energy-efficient lamps;
- paint the walls and choose furniture in light colour – it reflects light better and this way reduces electricity consumption.
other electricity appliances
The TV set, the audio system or the DVD payer can be large electricity consumers even when you do not use them. They consume electricity even in stand-by mode. If it is possible, disconnect them from the mains.
The average electricity consumption of a colour TV in stand-by mode is 73 kWh/year.
